How does one go about creating "everyday" objects?

Hi,
first the "simple" question.
If you have a knife, chair, table, house, all that kind of stuff.
How can you go and do it?
Stuff like Octopodoi, caterpillars etc... all have been done,
and i think they are more complex, but somehow i cant figure out
how to do simple stuff, ie a
line from left bottom, to right up
